Best craft beer in Lisbon

Whilst the craft beer scene in Lisbon is not overwhelmingly exciting, it certainly offers up enough variety in a city that ordinarily only serves Sagres or Super Bock as its two tap beers. We spent a month in Lisbon and can confidently say we visited all the prime spots. We got lucky enough to stay at two free TrustedHousesitters cat-sits for the most part. Before and after, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Saldahna Plaza booked with a generous Quidco bonus and Cozy and Sunny Apartment in Anjos. All this time in Lisbon meant we also checked out the city’s best natural wine, restaurants, and the world-famous custard tarts.

But before that, here’s our selection of the best craft beer in Lisbon…

The Breweries

If you can get through the 45 degree terror of cycling around downtown cobbled Lisbon, then taking a ride along the cycle path by the water is a lovely, calmer way to spend the day. One Saturday afternoon we took this to the max and hopped along the waterside cycle pathway. We were off to go check out a cluster of breweries in the industrial Marvila neighbourhood to the north-east of town.

Fermentage – the best craft brewery in Lisbon

Once we got out there, there were a good handful of craft breweries within walking distance. We started at Fermentage, which was our favourite brewery of the whole trip for their range and quality of beers. They also had a little patio out front that got plenty of sun. At around 2pm on a Saturday, it was pretty quiet, and mostly full of younger couples with strollers.

Dois Corvos – best IPA brewery in Lisbon

A few minutes from Fermentage you will find Dois Corvos. This was definitely the coolest taproom, though the beers at Fermentage were a cut above. The area was very industrial, and most of the patrons in the bars were young expat families. We also visited their taproom in the Intendente neighbourhood for a couple of enjoyable happy hour IPAs.

Pravda – best welcoming atmosphere

Less than a block away, we passed Pravda Craft Mission, a Ukrainian brewery that opened a bar in Lisbon. In fact this was their second – they have another close to where we were staying in Saldanha. The space was small and the beers leaned into Eastern Europe for styles. Think Tomato Gose, and Baltic Porter, among more accessable options. At both locations we received a warm welcome from both staff and guests, and we really enjoyed our visits.

Musa – best brewery vibe and sun spot

A bit further from those three breweries, but still within the Marvila neighbourhood, you’ll find Musa brewery. They have well-hopped beers, an endless events list, and a cool vibe. Oh and a very sunny terrace. You can find another Musa outpost back in the center of town, also with a sunny terrace.

The Bars

You won’t find craft beer options in the majority of regular bars in Lisbon. You’ll need to head to a specialist craft beer bar for that. There are a number dotted around town but only a handful really stood out to us…

Sputnik – best international range

Conveniently around the corner from Dois Corvos in Intendente, you will find Sputnik Craft Beer. Sputnik probably had the most varied international range, and you could see it was popular with the younger local crowd. We saw Belgian lambics and quadruples, and Czech and German classics on the tap list. They also had a good selection of modern craft beer, but perhaps were a little short on hoppy styles on our visit.

Cerveteca Lisboa – best craft beer stalwart in Lisbon

Much much further north you’ll find Cerveteca Lisboa. It’s probably not worth the trek on its own, but if you find yourself in the area its a must stop. Cerveteca Lisboa has been around for at least 10 years, as I first visited in 2015. It has moved venues since then but it is still a great place to hang out, especially on their terrace on a sunny day. It has a loyal following locally.

The Queen Ale – our favourite craft beer bar in Lisbon

Back towards the center of town, The Queen Ale was a firm craft beer favourite of ours. With a solid, mainly Portuguese and Spanish but regularly changing tap list, and a local neighbourhood vibe, we spent a few rounds here during our month in Lisbon.
